Southwest Florida's Golf Haven (and More)

The elegant and luxurious city of Naples, Fla., has become a veritable golfer’s heaven in recent years, with nearly 100, mostly private, courses now servicing the area. No community in Southwest Florida, however, can match the 54 holes of golf at Lely Resort Golf & Country Club.

54 holes of challenging golf.

But Lely Resort is set to become defined by much more than golf.

With the scheduled late-March groundbreaking of the Players Club & Spa which will join the community’s two existing clubhouses at the Flamingo Island and Classics golf courses, Lely residents will arguably have the most comprehensive amenity package available in Naples.

Among the highlights of the 20,000-square-foot Players Club are a 3,500-square-foot fitness center, 2,500-square-foot social room, 1,200-square-foot aerobics room, an arts and crafts room, card room, media room and theater.

Spa
Groundbreaking for the new Spa occurs this spring.

Outside will be a luxurious 7,500-square-foot resort-style swimming pool with a separate exercise and lap pool. It will also feature private cabanas and a beach area around the pool.

If that’s not enough entertainment, the area will have a children’s playground, yoga garden and open space for arts and crafts exhibits. Lely officials hope to have this future hub of social activity opened by winter 2005.

“One of the biggest things about Lely is it offers something for everybody, every lifestyle and every amenity,” said Claudine Wetzel, director of marketing for Stock Development, which now owns the community.

Another appealing element of Lely is its excellent location. Located just a few miles from downtown Naples, Lely residents have an assortment of dining and shopping options right at their fingertips. Not to mention the beach is just 15 minutes away.

A Great Variety of Real Estate Options
Much like its full menu of amenities, Lely seems to have something for everyone when it comes to the real estate department. Whether it’s garden condos, carriage, coach or town homes, attached and detached villas, single-family residences or custom-designed estate homes, there’s a neighborhood and residence to suit every lifestyle and budget, says Wetzel.

In fact, there are 11 different neighborhoods overall at Lely and 16 different builders featured in the community.

As Wetzel described it, there’s a “wide availability of product and pricing,” including units that start at $150,000 or homesites that sell for $500,000.

One of the entry-level neighborhoods is Ascot, which features 1,632-2,040 square-foot coach homes with one or two-car garages. Offering lake views and/or views of the Mustang Golf Course designed by Lee Trevino and William Graves, Ascot homes cost anywhere from the low-$200,000s to the mid-$300,000s. The corner units also feature a private neighborhood pool.

For those seeking single-family living, Mustang Island offers 2,038-2,785-square-foot homes priced from the low-$300,000 range, and the Majors neighborhood features homes from 2,400-3,400 square feet ranging in price from the low-$500,000s to $700,000-plus.

Meanwhile, in the luxury estate section called Classics Plantation Estates, lots start in the high $100,000s, with house and lot packages beginning at $750,000.

One of the newest offerings at Lely is Prestwick Place, which features luxury villa homes starting under $300,000. Due to “incredible demand” with the Masters Reserve community, Prestwick Place was being launched in late spring, according to Wetzel.

And this is just the start of what will be many new products, features and amenities to be unveiled at Lely in the coming years. “There’s a lot of terrific new neighborhoods on the horizon,” says Wetzel.

Golf Galore at Lely
There is no question golf takes center stage at Lely, what with 54 holes of championship golf to play. What makes the golf offerings unique, however, is that two are public and one is private.

One of the more decorated courses is Flamingo Island Golf Course, designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. Characterized by extensive sculpting and shaping of the land, the par-72 layout also features large contoured greens which yields 18 holes of interesting golf.

Golfers enjoy a water view at the golf club.

The second public course is The Mustang, which was designed by Lee Trevino and William Graves. This is a more forgiving layout of the two and features 12 lakes that complement the routing.

Lely’s private course, called The Classics, was designed by Gary Player and features a subtropical woodlands setting with tree-lined fairways and gently contoured greens. Membership in this club also provides access to the other two courses. Another benefit to Lely’s golf portfolio is that golf memberships are optional.

“What we’re saying here is it’s your choice,” Wetzel says. “If you want to play occasionally, we have the public courses. If you want more golf, join the club.”
